ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS FOR SENIORS
* Illinois Cares Rx/Circuit Breaker -Helps pay for your Medicare D
premium for select plans and lowers your co-pays at the pharmacy
for prescriptions It may provide a discount on your license plate
sticker. It could also provide a onetime grant check to help with
your rent or property taxes. Income limits apply. You must be 65
years old or disabled to apply. Clients must file every year to receive
program benefits.
* Social Security Extra Help-Federal Prescription assistance for low
income seniors and disabled on Medicare under the 150% Federal
poverty guidelines. There is an asset limit as well. Some clients
may need to re-file every year.
* Medicaid and Medicare Savings Program- Clients need to make
sure and fill out their redetermination papers every year. Medicaid
may help with medical cost. The Medicare Savings Program pays
the Medicare B premium for low income Medicare recipients and
may cover some medical cost after Medicare does if you are under
a certain income limit asset.
* Food Stamps- Clients need to make sure and fill out their
redetermination papers for food stamps every year.
* LIHEAP- Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program -
heating assistance for households under the 150% Federal poverty
guidelines. Cooling assistance is also available to seniors and the
disabled in the summer. Clients can file only once during the
heating season.
* Senior Homestead Exemption- provides a $4000 reduction from
the equalized assessed valuation. You must be 65 years or older to
file for this exemption.
* Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze - allows seniors to elect to
freeze the equalized assessed value (EAV) of their property at the
EAV on their property for the taxable year the applicant first
becomes eligible. You must file for this every year.
* Disabled Persons' Homestead Exemption- Provides a $2000
reduction in the equalized assessed value (EAV) of the property
owned and occupied by a disabled person who is liable for the
payment of property taxes.
* Link Up- Assistance for the telephone bill. Seniors must qualify
for LIHEAP, food stamps, Section 8, SSI, or Medicaid to qualify for
this program.
* Safelink- Free prepaid cell phone with minutes to those who
qualify for LIHEAP, food stamps, Section 8, SSI, or Medicaid, etc.
* ITAC- Free amplified telephones for the hard of hearing. TTY
machines and Captel phones also available. If you have landline
telephone service you may qualify for this program.
* Do not call registry - The Do Not Call Registry may limit the sales
calls you receive on your home or cell phone.
